Official Description: This is book #1 of the Falcon Mercenary Group series

One woman’s mission to bring down a sexy elemental shifter turns into a battle of wills…and hearts.

Hostage recovery specialist Eli Chance has a secret. He was born a shifter. A freak of nature.

While on a mission, Eli’s men and their mercenary guide are exposed to a powerful chemical agent, and suddenly his secret has become easier to hide. Now he’s not the only one with the gift. But for his men, this “gift” is becoming more and more of a curse.

Tyana Berezovsky’s brother Damiano was the guide for Eli’s team and was the worst affected by the chemical. As he grows increasingly unstable, Tyana fears she’s going to lose him to the beast he is becoming.

Tyana will do whatever it takes to help him, even if it means using her body to go after the one man she thinks holds all the blame—and possibly the cure. Eli Chance.

Product Warnings: Violence, blood, guns, knives, ass kicking, people who do mean things, bad people dying, explicit sex and smart mouths.

My Take:

Maya Banks seems to be hit or miss for me. My favorite books by her were the Highlander books, but I wasn’t in love with Rush (see below). This one was kind of in between in the enjoyment level. It starts off with sex and seduction, it has some story, which is fun, then more sex and seduction. I kind of like Tyana, I would like her more if she wasn’t so inwardly weepy, but she’s an alright character. I like Eli, kind of, they are definitely two peas in a pod.

So Eli is a shifter by birth, his parents were not, he just happened to be that way. He happened to be in an ops group that were sprayed with a chemical agent that turned everyone in to shifters. They, however, can’t control themselves, have no control when shifted, and are being driven slowly mad. One of these guys is Tyana’s ‘brother’ and Tyana goes after Eli looking for answers. No one knows he was born this way, he just let everyone believe he was changed during the accident. So we have a bit of cat and mouse. We also throw in a super bad guy and lack of communication, then we have the chaos that is Tyana and Eli’s life. If you take out all the superfluous sex scenes, which are not that great honestly, then the story is pretty darn good. We add the sex and you’re just like WTF ARE YOU DOING PEOPLE! Both Eli and Tyana and the entire Falcon Mercenary group are ‘people without a country’. They all got kicked out for being dumb or mercenaries, or getting blamed for shit they didn’t do, but whatever. It’s a quick read, the narrator did a great job if you’re looking for a commuter book….just don’t turn it up in the subway or during a car pool, then it might get awkward.
